A card carrying beauty-junkie and magazine addict, twenty-eight-year-old Sara Happ has loved all things
bath and body for as long as she can remember.
I brought my curling iron and blow-dryer with me to girl scout camp. We slept in tents, she explains.
But in 2005, Sara realized that there was a hole in the beauty market. I kept reading "exfoliate lips with a
wet washcloth or baby toothbrush" in all of my magazines, and I thought there had to be a better way.
So I made it myself.
Today she is thrilled to be on shelves alongside her favorite brands.
A native of suburban Chicago, she also considers Los Angeles home. Sara studied Broadcast Journalism
and graduated from the University of Southern California in 2001.
She takes bubble baths each and every night, enjoys breaking a good sweat practicing yoga, and is
constantly in search of the perfect white t-shirt (Bitten by Sarah Jessica Parker is her current t-shirt
obsession). Sara loves being an entrepreneur and gets her energy and inspiration from whipping up
products that she herself cannot live without.
How the cult product was born:
The Idea
It is a great time to be a girl. We have so many choices when it comes to beauty products. For every
beauty problem, there are countless solutions (and they usually come in fabulous packaging that we will
happily display in our bathrooms and on our nightstands). I love it! I also love to exfoliate. That feeling
of seriously smooth skin, the way your face and body glow after sloughing off those dead cells. Heaven.
But when it came to my lips, there was really nothing out there on the
(wonderfully-chocked-full-of-every-product-you-could-ever-want) beauty market to keep them from
looking dull or to remove the dry, flaky skin that no amount of gloss can cover. I could picture exactly
what I wanted this product to look like, to smell like, and to taste like. But most of all, I wanted results.
So I got to work.
The Formula
My kitchen became my laboratory. After weeks of mixing and experimenting, I came up with a formula
that I simply could not get enough of, and the lip scrub was born. My lips had never been pinker or
smoother; my gloss never looked better. It became a staple in my makeup bag, and I was using it every
single day. Really, truly- every day. That is when I knew I was on to something.
The Packaging
I am a very visual person, so, this part was crucial. I knew the product had to look as good as it
performed. It had to be something I would want to display in my bathroom. Something special.
I finally decided on a rich, unique chocolate-brown box tied with a sheer white ribbon, making each lip
scrub look like an adorable little present.
Introducing the Product to the Marketplace
I began in Los Angeles, which feels like home to me, having lived there for years before moving east. I
spent two days meeting with the owners of my favorite boutiques, crossing my fingers and hoping one of
them would say yes. I could not believe it when not one but ALL of them agreed to carry my products!
The positive response to this product has been incredible. the lip scrub is now available in over 250
luxury boutiques throughout the United States and Canada, and is distributed in 20+ countries, including
the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and Germany with more locations being added
every day.
